Whispered doubts. Constant distractions. Small compromises. Little fears. Quiet exhaustion. Sometimes its just life “lifeing”. But life’s battles aren’t always physical. In fact, the most significant battles we face are often spiritual. We must be cognizant that a spiritual battle waging and physical armor will not protect us. As believers, we are called to prepare ourselves for these unseen struggles.
The good news is that God has not left us defenseless. He has given us the Holy Spirit, who guides us through the situations in our life. And he’s also given us tools to endure and conquer the enemy. You can find the tools described in Ephesians 6:10-18. Paul urges us “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”
This post serves as the foundation for a journey where we will explore each piece of the Armor of God in greater detail. Let’s begin by understanding why we need this armor and how it equips us for victory.
During his third missionary journey, Paul ministered in Ephesus for approximately two years (or more) and the gospel was spreading throughout the region. In this letter, Paul provided instructions about relationships, including parents and children, and masters and servants. He also urged believers to stand firm in the face of spiritual opposition.
Imprisoned for his faith, he understood the crucial role of steadfast belief, making his plea all the more compelling. Paul lovingly reminds us that our struggles are not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rules, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Eph. 6:12, NIV)
These battles are real, and they require more than worldly weapons: “For the weapons of our warfare are not of flesh, but have divine power to destroy strongholds.” (2 Cor. 10:4. ESV).
Paul paints a picture of a loving God who arms His beloved. He writes, “Stand firm with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. (Eph. 6:14-15, NIV). He continues, “In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.” (Eph. 6:16-18, NIV).
Let’s dive into each piece of this divine armor.
“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist…” Ephesians 6:14
A soldier’s belt holds everything together. It keeps your armor from slipping, just as truth holds our spiritual lives in place. Jesus declared, “I am the way, the truth, and the life…” (John 14;6). The world offers half-truths that shifts morality, but God’s truth is absolute.
So when the enemy whispers lies about your identity, the belt of truth keeps you anchored. John 8:32 declares “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” When you put on the belt of truth, God guides our decisions, and protects us from the lies of the enemy.
“…with the breastplate of righteousness in place…” (Ephesians 6:14).
The enemy loves to attack your heart. He reminds you of past failures, and fuels shame. He tries to convince you that you’re unworthy of God’s love. But righteousness is about being protected by Christ – it’s nothing we’ve done, but what Christ did for us on the cross.
Isaiah 54:17 assures us, “No weapon formed against you will prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you.” When you wear the breastplate of righteousness, Christ’s righteousness covers you. “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Cor. 5:21). When you walk in His righteousness, you stand guarded against the accusations of the enemy.
“…with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.” (Ephesians 6:15)
A soldier without the right shoes are vulnerable, and can be easily knocked off balance. But the shoes of peace provides stability, firm grounding. It’s not a wishy-washy peace that’s dependent on circumstances. This gospel of peace is deep and unwavering. It’s a peace that can only come from knowing Christ has already won the victory. The Gospel prepares us to move forward with confidence, no matter the the circumstances.
Isaiah declares, “You will keep in perfect peace whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” (Isa. 26:3 ESV). Whenever/wherever you go, you carry this peace with you. Whatever this situation, be it conflict, uncertainty, adversity, you can walk with confidence, know that Christ has overcome the world (John 16:33).
“Take the helmet of salvation…” (Ephesians 6:17)
Our mind is a battlefield where many battles are won or lost. The enemy plants seeds of confusion and doubt. He invades your thoughts with condemnation and guilt. He’ll whisper, “Are you really saved?” Are you sure that God really love you? Will He really come through for you?” The devil will try to paint a picture that God is always angry and He’s waiting for you to do something wrong, so he can snatch you up.
But our works could never save us. It is a loving Father that sent his only begotten son to die for us and resurrect! God did that for us! Salvation is our covering. It is our unshakable assurance. Paul proclaims in Romans 8:38-39 that “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers…will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (ESV). The helmet of salvation secures your identity. You are His. You are redeemed. You are victorious.
“…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:17)
Every warrior needs a weapon. And the Word of God is designed for battle. It serves as both a offensive and defensive weapon. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He did not reason with the enemy. Every time he answered with Scripture, “It is written…” (Matt. 4:1-11).
Hebrews 4:12 tells us: “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any double-edge sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
This means that the Word of God cuts through deception and shatters doubt. It speaks life where there was once despair. So when the enemy comes against you, speak the Word. Declare His Promises. Don’t waste time trying to reason with the devil. Shut it down with the Sword of the Spirit. Stand firm in truth that can only come from the Word of God.
While the Armor of God equips us, prayer activates it. It’s essential to winning any spiritual battles. Paul writes about this in Ephesians 6:18: “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” (Eph. 6:18).
Prayer strengthens us. It helps us stay alert and allows God’s power to flow in and through us. We are assured in Philippians 4:6-7: “…do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (NIV).
Putting on the Armor of God is not a one-time event. You must wear it at all times. Be committed about this, especially now. Peter warns: “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (1 Pet. 5:8). Don’t let it be you. Stay equipped.
Start your day by praying on each piece of the armor.
Meditate on key scriptures that are related to each piece.
At the end of the day, reflect on moments when you felt spiritually strong or weak. Take it to the Lord in prayer and adjust accordingly.
Finally, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” (Jas. 1:22). When we live out the truths of the Armor of God, we stand firm in the victory Christ has already won on our behalf.
With God’s armor, we can withstand spiritual attacks at home, in our community, and at work. In Romans 8:37, Paul reminds us that “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (ESV).
Over the coming months, I’ll break down each piece of armor in greater detail. For now, let’s commit to putting on the full armor daily. Reflect on your confidence in your spiritual battles when you’re equipped with the Armor of God. For you are never alone-God is with you every step of the way.
