Direct the Course of Your Career
Have you ever attempted to drive somewhere you’ve never been without a map? Hit or miss, you may eventually get there, but it sure would have been a lot easier and less time consuming to use directions on how to get there.
That’s why I love GPS. I can get step-by-step directions to my destination and I can avoid construction areas and toll roads. And I can get an estimate on how long my trip will take. This tool eases some of the stress that comes with being on the road and it saves time and money.
That’s the same with your career path. A lack of a clear, actionable plan to achieve your career goals will cost you time, money and frustration. Without your career road map, you may find yourself unsatisfied, hoping that your supervisor will see how loyal you are and eventually promote you. You may even settle for a dead-end job. Or you settle for a salary that does not pay your bills, so you’re looking for other ways to supplement your income.
It doesn’t have to be that way
Like a road map, an actionable career plan helps you navigate to your dream career. You will become aware of your strengths and weaknesses, be able to assess opportunities and challenges, understand what skills you may need, know your worth and be able to negotiate your salary accordingly. A plan can help you figure out whether to move up the corporate ladder, enter another industry or decide to go into business for yourself.
