Discovering Your Life Purpose As A Christian

Home | Know Your Power | Discovering Your Life Purpose As A Christian

Understanding your life’s purpose is a profound journey that touches every aspect of your existence. As Christians, this journey is not just about finding personal fulfillment but aligning with God’s will and embracing the calling He has placed on your life. Discovering your life purpose through the lens of Christianity involves seeking God’s guidance, understanding biblical principles, and trusting in His plan for you.

Here’s how you can start this journey:

Seek God’s Will Through Prayer and Scripture

The first step in discovering your life purpose is to seek God’s will through prayer and immerse yourself in His Word. The Bible serves as a guidebook, revealing God’s intentions and His grand design for your life:

  • Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for prosperity and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” (NIV).

God reassures us He has good plans for each of us, filled with hope and purpose. Pray and ask God to reveal His plans for your life. Be open to the answers He offers through Scripture and the Holy Spirit.

2. Embrace the Great Commission as Your Life Purpose

Known as the Great Commission, Jesus gave explicit instructions to His disciples. That was their mission. This commission serves as the foundation of every Christian’s purpose and guides how we use our gifts and talents in service to the Kingdom of God.

Matthew 28:16-20: “Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him, but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’” (NIV).

Our life purpose is bigger than us. It’s about making disciples and spreading the gospel. To accomplish this, God equips each of us with unique skills to fulfill His divine mandate. So, whether you teach, serve, lead, or have any other skill, it’s to be used to glorify God and achieve your purpose.

Understand Your Unique Gifts and Talents

God has blessed each of us with unique gifts and talents intended for your good and for His glory. Understanding and embracing these gifts is key to discovering how you carry out your life’s purpose.

1 Peter 4:10: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (NIV).

Consider the abilities and passions God has placed in your heart. How can you use them to serve others and further His kingdom? You often find your purpose when your gifts meet the needs of the world.

Embrace Your Identity in Christ

Finding your purpose in life begins with knowing who you are in Christ. Understanding who you are in Him gives you confidence to pursue the path He has set before you.

Ephesians 2:10: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (NIV).

You are God’s wonderful masterpiece, created with intention and purpose. When you embrace this truth, you will do the good works He has prepared for you.

Trust in God’s Timing

God’s timing is perfect, even when it doesn’t align with our own. His timeliness and our limited time are not the same. God knows better than us. Trusting in His timing and guidance is vital to your journey of purpose.

Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” (NIV).

God may not reveal your entire purpose all at once, but as you trust in Him and follow His lead, He will guide you step by step.

Live a Life of Service and Love

Loving and serving others undergird the Christian faith. Your life purpose finds its roots in how you live out this commandment.

Matthew 22:37-39: “Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (NIV).

Living a life of love and service is a powerful expression of your purpose. It reflects the love of Christ and affects those around you, often revealing more of God’s plan for your life as you walk in obedience to His commands.

Be Open to God’s Call

God’s calling on your life may come in unexpected ways. Be open to His leading and willing to step out in faith, even when the path seems uncertain.

Isaiah 6:8: “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” (NIV).

Responding to God’s call with a willing heart is essential in fulfilling your purpose. It may lead you to places and opportunities you never imagined, but trust that God is with you every step of the way.

Reflect and Adjust Your Course

As you go through life, consistently reflect on your path and make adjustments as God leads. Your purpose will evolve as you grow in your faith.

Romans 12:2: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.” (NIV).

When you renew your mind by reading the Word of God and consistently praying, you remain aligned with God’s will. This will help you hear God more clearly and discern His plan for you.

Discovering your life purpose through the Christian lens is a dynamic journey. One that requires constant prayer, reflection, studying the Word of God, and trusting God’s plan for your life. As you seek His will, relish in your identity in Christ and step out in faith. Your purpose testifies to who you are in Christ and what you do for Him.

God has not hidden his purpose for your life. You will find your path as you walk in obedience to His Word and leading through the Holy Spirit. I pray your journey to discovering your purpose will bring you closer to God and help you fulfill the incredible purpose He has for you.
