In her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, Carol Dweck detailed the differences between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. Individuals with a fixed mindset believe their basic abilities, talents, and skills are limited and so they seek to validate themselves. Conversely, individuals with a growth mindset think that their ability comes from their efforts and so they focus on developing themselves.
If you have difficulty sticking with good habits or learning new skills, it may be due to a fixed mindset. The good news is that with a few simple steps you can shift your fixed mindset to a growth mindset and change your life.
Increase your Self Awareness
Become very aware of your abilities and talents and comprehend your strengths and weaknesses. Ask others for feedback so you can learn what areas of development which you need to focus.
View Failure Differently
Experiencing failure gives you time to apply extra effort to improve your results significantly. Failure is what you do, and your new understanding is what you can learn from failure. View delays and denials as opportunities. It is important to remember that your failures do not define you as a human being.
Create a New Compelling Belief
You can create a new compelling belief for your life by believing that your skills and talents can be honed if you learn to apply yourself. It is your consistent effort and enjoyment in your life that will illuminate your road to mastery. Break your limiting beliefs.
Commit to Continuous Learning
Make a decision to focus on your growth and learning continually. Start by asking more questions and being more curious about those you meet. Learn about the journey they’ve been on and what they can teach you.
Welcome Challenges
Trials are a part of life. Learn to embrace and excel at challenges. It is the challenges that you face during your life that help to propel you toward your goals.
